Retire When You Damn Well Feel Like It
Gonna be weird seeing Peyton Manning in a different team’s jersey if that’s how it ends up going down, but like I said about Brett Favre, if you’re healthy enough to do it, and you’re still having fun doing it, and teams out there are still willing to pony up good money to give you the opportunity to do it…then…well…don’t stop doing it.
I think some sports fans just get too obsessed with having the “ideal storybook version” of a player’s career in their heads, where the player retires just slightly past the peak of his prime, plays with only one team his whole career, and rides off into the sunset with most fans thinking he could have maybe gotten one more championship if he really wanted. John Elway is really the only example of this that comes to mind.
Personally, I feel like the athletes have no obligation to conform to the narrative of their career that fans want to dream up for them. Guess what—-Joe Montana finished up his career on the Chiefs, Emmett Smith finished up his career on the Cardinals, Johnny Unitas ended up with the Chargers. And there’s not a damn thing wrong with any of that in my eyes.
